Web Exclusive Content Forbes names Centre College best in South

Centre College has been named the best college in the South by Forbes magazine.

The Danville school “outperforms Ivies, boasts some of the most fiercely loyal alumni in the world, and guarantees graduation within four years--or it will pay for an additional year of tuition-free study,” according to the Forbes story.

The list of the 20 best colleges in the Southern United States was based on student satisfaction rankings, indicators of average student loan debt, how likely students are to graduate within four years and have postgraduate employment success, and academic and research awards won by students and faculty.

Centre College, founded in 1819, has 1,215 undergraduate students and over 100 faculty members, 98% of which hold the highest degrees in their fields. In the last decade alone, Centre produced 17 Fulbright Scholars, five Goldwater Scholars, a Rhodes Scholar and a Truman Scholar. Its alumni include two U.S. vice presidents, a chief justice of the United States, 13 U.S. senators, and 43 U.S. representatives.

Forbes worked with the Center for College Affordability and Productivity to construct the list, which is culled from the 2009 list of America’s Best Colleges. Centre ranked 14th in that list.
